How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness or Collar (So It Actually Fits)
The single biggest reason a new harness or collar disappoints is the wrong size — not the product itself. A harness that's too loose lets a nervous dog back right out of it; one that's too tight rubs and chafes. The good news: measuring your dog properly takes about two minutes with a soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler if that's what you've got).
What You'll Need to Measure
- Neck: Wrap the tape around the base of the neck, where a collar naturally sits.
- Chest (girth): Wrap around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.
- Weight: Most sizing charts use weight as a cross-check alongside these two measurements.
The Two-Finger Rule
Once it's on, you should be able to comfortably slide two fingers flat between the strap and your dog's body — snug enough that they can't back out of it, loose enough that it's not digging in. Check this at the neck and around the chest, not just one spot.
Collars vs. Harnesses: Different Fit Priorities
Our Everyday Adjustable Dog Collar is a good example of what to look for — a wide adjustment range with a secure buckle and D-ring, so you're not stuck between two sizes. For harnesses, fit matters even more since an ill-fitting one can cause chafing under the front legs. Our No-Pull Dog Harness runs S–XL with multiple adjustment points at the neck and girth for a more custom fit than a one-size strap. If you'd rather have a matched, pre-sized set, the Anti-Fray Nylon Leash & Collar Set pairs a collar and leash sized to work together.
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Sizing off breed alone. Two dogs of the same breed can vary a lot in build — always measure the actual dog in front of you.
- Measuring over a thick coat. For heavily-coated breeds, measure against the skin, not over a puffed-up winter coat.
- Buying once and never rechecking. Puppies grow fast, and even adult dogs' weight can shift — recheck fit every few months, especially for a growing dog.
